Sugarcane Health Monitoring with Satellites

Loading Events

Australia produces 31.1 million tonnes of sugarcane annually, putting Australia in the top ten for production worldwide. However, sugarcane yield can be heavily hampered by the impact of several health conditions. Ratoon Stunting Disease (RSD) alone can reduce yield by up to 40%, costing the sugarcane industry more than $25 million annually. RSD is both highly contagious and not visibly identifiable, requiring samples to undergo lab testing. These samples are difficult and time-consuming to acquire given the large size of sugarcane farms. This talk presents the results of an investigation and development of a large-scale sugarcane health monitoring system with multispectral satellites to increase the probability of detecting disease, reducing its cost and impact on the industry.
