About The IEEE Frances B. Hugle Scholarship

The IEEE Frances B. Hugle Scholarship was established to honor the memory of Frances B. Hugle, her many significant engineering accomplishments, and to help provide the resources for engineers to follow in her footsteps. The scholarship is presented to up to two IEEE Student Members who have completed two years of undergraduate study in an ABET-accredited engineering program at a university or college within the United States.

This scholarship is made possible by the Frances B. Hugle Scholarship Fund of the IEEE Foundation.

Scholarship Criteria

Scope

Up to two (2) awards annually

Eligibility

  • IEEE Student Member attending university or college within the United States.
  • Full-time undergraduate student who has completed two (2) years of undergraduate study and is currently enrolled in an ABET-accredited engineering program.
  • Evidence of at least a 3.7 grade point average on a 4.0 scale.
  • Applicant may apply multiple times, but can only be awarded the scholarship one time.
  • Self-nominations and nominations from others are acceptable.

Required Documents to be Submitted with the Application

Note: All essays are reviewed for plagiarism to ensure originality and integrity.

  • Two essays: (1) 1,000 words on why the applicant wants to go into the engineering profession, and (2) 500 words on why the applicant should receive the scholarship.
  • Two letters of recommendation: (1) from an academic reference, such as a professor or department chair, and (2) from a personal reference who knows the candidate well and can comment on the candidate’s character.

Selection Committee 

The scholarship recipient(s) will be recommended by the IEEE WIE Education and Outreach Subcommittee and approved by the IEEE WIE Committee.

Scholarship Award

The recipient will receive a certificate and a monetary prize shall be US$2,500, per scholarship recipient.
