Jenifer Castillo, Chair of IEEE WIE Committee 2021-2022

Dear members,

I’m writing my second to last message as current chair of IEEE WIE. I would like to thank you once again for being a part of this great community. I am excited to share the following news regarding the new dues for developing economies and low-income countries, the IEEE WIE Forum East USA and our upcoming WIE Awards Ceremony.

To begin, you may have received some communications about the new dues in some countries. A key part of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion, is understanding the different situations that may affect different parts of the world. This dues reduction is our way of promoting equity in our community. We are reinforcing the opportunity for professionals in areas were the income is not as high as others, to access our benefits, products and services, and be a part of this amazing network to grow together as professionals, at a cost that is consonant with the local realities. Being born and raised in a developing economy, I know the positive impact this will have on our membership.

The IEEE WIE Forum East USA is coming, and if you do not know about it, please take a minute to visit their website! This is a great event that has been consistently growing year over year. Due to the pandemic, the past two editions had to be cancelled, and it is coming back this year to lovely Providence, Rhode Island, with a fantastic program that will for sure impact the professional and personal growth of all the attendees. We hope to see you there!!!

Last but not least, our Awards Ceremony is also approaching! On December 8th we will celebrate our 2022 WIE award recipients. I will also have the pleasure to report out the results on this past years activities while passing the baton to our incoming IEEE WIE chair. As chair of the WIE Awards Subcommittee, Andrea Carrion will be chairing this ceremony, reason why she is my guest for this newsletter. Thank you Andrea for sharing a bit about your experience as a WIE member!

Meet Andrea Carrion Herrera

I became an IEEE WIE member because I found a community with similar interests that helped me strengthen my desire to be a technology professional. Since then I felt the commitment to share the opportunity I had to get involved with engineering and show teenagers that there are women who are developing technology and that they can also be part of this change in society.
