A Message From Jenifer Castillo, Chair of IEEE WIE Committee 2021-2022
Dear IEEE WIE Members and Volunteers,
Welcome to our newsletter! You will find some great information about the upcoming events, tools, programs, and many other things. Allow me to start this message by sharing with you that we had the opportunity to hold our annual WIE Committee meeting in early April. With the attendance and presentations of IEEE, IEEE Member & Geographic Activities, IEEE Technical Activities Board, and IEEE Educational Activities Board leadership, WIE Subcommittees Chairs, and the strong support of IEEE and IEEE WIE Staff members, we had a two-day meeting full of information for the WIE committee to thrive for the benefit of our members, and also opportunities to dream together and shape the future of our WIE.
We also celebrated International Women’s Day in wonderful ways, and one of the key ones was our 25th anniversary 12-hour online event covering all regions with presentations: What a wonderful session it was! If you could not attend it, the recording is already available on our website: you do not want to miss it!
We kicked off our ILS of 2022! With the Region 5 Baton Rouge, Louisiana, USA Summit, we have started this 2022 cycle on a great note. Please remember the list of the upcoming WIE International Leadership Summits are on our website. I encourage you to find the closest one to you and attend! These are great events for your professional growth.
Our Diversity and Inclusion efforts keep on growing, having new IEEE OUs supporting our pledge, like Region 8 and 9. Also adding two new adjunct members to our committee will bring larger gender diversity, and with it, all the benefits it promotes. As well as other ideas, perspectives, and stronger plans to attain our goals.
Thanks to all the volunteers, and thank you all for being IEEE WIE members, do not miss all the opportunities that WIE offers to advance your career! As always, I have the great pleasure to invite one of the committee members to share a message. For this newsletter, Lin Cai, our newest member, will be sharing with you some of her journey!

Lin Cai, WIE Voting Member 2022
Hello, I’m Lin Cai. I am a voting member of the IEEE Women in Engineering (WIE) Committee and a faculty member with the University of Victoria. I have been volunteering with IEEE for two decades in various roles. I volunteer with WIE because I see the gender gap in our fields and hope to bridge the gap, enhance understanding, and promote equity and diversity in engineering and society. When I was a kid, people often reminded me what girls cannot do or cannot do well, including Engineering. Swimming against the tide, I enjoy my Engineering career so much that I want to inspire more girls and women to join us. During the journey, I received numerous support from many mentors, so I am obligated to volunteer my time to support the future generation of engineers.
