Dr. Neena Imam: Accelerated Computing and AI Hardware

June 24, 2022 @ 12:00 pm - 1:00 pm

Please join the webinar by Dr. Neena Imam. Title: Accelerated Computing and AI Hardware Abstract: One of the technological drivers that are changing the nature of today’s computing ecosystem is the plateauing of Moore’s law. CPU performance has plateued due to a variety of factors, including challenges with power and frequency management. New strategies, such as accelerated computing, are needed to meet our computing demands . In accelerated computing, an accelerator hardware, such as a GPU or FPGA, is used to speed up parts of the computation. The second technological driver is the explosion of big data. 90% of world’s data was created in last 2 years – now reaching an incredible 175 Zettabytes. Analyzing this data requires AI models that continue to grow in complexity. For state-of-the-art AI, we have seen the size of the models grow by 3 orders of magnitude in last 3 years. The concurrent plateauing of CPU performance, the world’s demand for more computing power, and the emergence of AI made it necessary to develop accelerated hardware, or AI chips. There is a large ecosystem of AI hardware. In this talk, we will discuss these special purpose hardware and applications. Bio: Neena Imam recently joined NVIDIA as the Director of Strategic Researcher Engagement. Before NVIDIA, Neena served as the Deputy Director of Research Collaboration in the Computing and Computational Sciences Directorate (CCSD) at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL), performing research in extreme-scale computing. Neena holds a Doctoral degree in Electrical Engineering from Georgia Institute of Technology, with Master’s and Bachelor’s degrees in the same field from Case Western Reserve University and California Institute of Technology, respectively. Neena also served as the Science and Technology Fellow for Senator Lamar Alexander in Washington D.C. (2010-2012) and is a senior member of IEEE.
