IEEE WIE NUST PNEC- Playing MATLAB

IEEE WIE NUST PNEC was founded with an aim to empower women in positions as engineers and leaders as well as encourage all students to expand their skillsets in order to perform their best in the practical world. With this great purpose in mind, an event titled, “Playing MATLAB” was organized on the 4th and 5th of October to introduce the software and delve deeper into the technicalities of MATLAB.

The webinar was conducted on Zoom, with a WhatsApp group created for the 35 registrants belonging to different areas of Pakistan, Malaysia, and Italy to cater to their queries of general nature. The team’s official Gmail account was used to convey specific information to those who registered.

Out of the 35 registrants, 13 were females which; considering engineering to be a male-dominated field; shall be regarded as an achievement for the team in the subject of educating women in STEM.

Mr. Ghulam covered the basics of MATLAB on the first day of the series while explaining some advanced codes, specifically the prey-predator model the next day. The Webinar was recorded and the videos were put on YouTube for the benefit of others. The event ended with those attending both days of the webinar being granted certificates by our chapter.

IEEE and WIE NUST-PNEC Student Chapter-Job Experience without a job

On 11th September, WIE NUST PNEC Student Chapter in collaboration with IEEE NPSC conducted a webinar about gaining job experience to help the undergraduates and recent graduates, who lack enough job experience to kick-start their career. This webinar was organized with an objective to provide the new budding engineers, especially women in STEM, with methods that assist them in making their way up the ladder in the industry and discover their market worth, which without prior job experience becomes one of the biggest hurdles in the way of novices.

The webinar was conducted on Google Meets with 55 registrations. The organizing committee actively communicated with the registrants via email and WhatsApp, while also being open to questions of the interested people via Messenger.

Mr. Adnan Rafique presented insights into the ways one can adopt to increase the likelihood of getting employed. Furthermore, he also reviewed the résumés of the participants and pointed out the common mistakes. The recording of the Webinar has been uploaded on YouTube channels of the organizing societies for the benefit of others.

Being a minority in the industry, women need a better sense of direction before stepping into the professional world because of their lesser representation. This webinar was specifically arranged to help women in STEM understand the requirements beforehand, though the event had a bigger vision of equipping all the new engineers in general with the tools taught in the webinar.
