A Recap of Important IEEE WIE Happenings

WIE Membership

As of May 2024, there were 34,341 WIE Members, a 1.3%+ increase year over year (YoY), with a 10.2% change in Higher grade membership, a -2.9% change in graduate student members, and a 3.3% change in student membership.

IEEE Milestone

The following IEEE milestone plaque was unveiled on May 7, 2024, at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia, PA.

I, Celia Shahnaz, IEEE WIEC Chair and IEEE History Committee member has served as an advocate of this milestone proposal and Kate McDevitt, IEEE Philadelphia Section Vice Chair has served as the proposer of the Milestone.

IEEE WIE and TryEngineering Call for Hands-On Activities – 13 Submissions Received.

IEEE WIE and TryEngineering sought inspiring hands-on activities developed by WIE Members to share on the TryEngineering website. These resources will equip other volunteers and educators around the globe, enriching their STEM outreach programs for school-aged children in classroom settings or online learning.

Chairs (2) of the IEEE WIE Education Subcommittee will join TryEngineering’s team of reviewers to judge the submissions received.

International Leadership Summits

Out of 9 ILS for this year, 3 are completed, and 6 with planning in progress. If you are residing nearby to the location of the 2024 IEEE WIE ILSs, Please join and render your contributions, to make them successful and impactful.

Dubai, UAE – 25 April – The Dubai IEEE Women in Engineering International Leadership Summit (ILS) aspired to play
a key role in shaping the success of women in engineering. The primary goal of the
event was to provide a comprehensive and impactful platform for fostering the growth of
attendees and advancing the professional landscape for women and attendees in
diverse fields!

Region 7
Calgary, Canada – 2-4 May – The Calgary WIE ILS featured multiple keynotes, workshops and seminars aimed at discussing the current problems that we face around the world, including issues around sustainability, education, and the future of technology. Conference participants had the opportunity to develop the skills required for building solutions to these challenging problems.

Guatemala City, Guatemala – 7 May – The objective of the Guatemala ILS was to provide tools for women who seek to develop their leadershipRemove featured image skills and promote their professional future in STEM areas.

IEEE WIE Family Cares Grant Program

IEEE Women in Engineering Committee (WIE) established the IEEE WIE Family Cares Grant Program (FCGP) to support persons of any gender with primary responsibility for caring for family members to attend IEEE conferences. The program aims to relieve the financial burden of family care responsibilities (children, seniors, disabled) so that IEEE members can attend IEEE conferences.
The motion was approved during the November 18, 2023, MGA Board meeting. The program initially launched on January 31st but needed to be paused in February. It is relaunched in June 2024.

Timeline:
Submissions Window: June 3 – July 12
Judging: July 13 – August 30
Announcement: Early September

2024 IEEE WIE Day

The 2024 IEEE WIE Day will be celebrated from 23 June to 12 July. This year’s theme is ‘Engaging More Women in AI and 4IR Technologies’.

Number of WIE Day Ambassadors – 269. This is a 12.6% increase from the number of ambassadors in 2023.

Raisa Fabiha from R3 is appointed as the Chair of IEEE WIE day 2024

IEEE WIE Manga Story Contest

The Manga Story Contest has entered its second year. The 2023 IEEE WIE Manga stories have been translated into Japanese, Spanish, and Portuguese, and the PDFs of these translations are available for download.

The 2024 Manga Story Contest closed with 81 submissions – a 92.9% increase from 2023. Judging is in progress and will be announced at the end June/July. The calls for translators for Chinese, Hindi, Bangla, French and Arabic have been sent. Please apply!

IEEE WIE Awards and Recognition

Judging is currently in progress under the oversight of the IEEE WIE Awards and Recognition Subcommittee. Winners will be announced at the end June/July. Stay tuned and geared up for 2025 to showcase your impactful contribution to IEEE WIE community!
