On April 28, 2025, the Informatics History Exhibition of the John von Neumann Computer Society is organizing a career orientation day for girls at the Szent-Györgyi Albert Agora in Szeged.
Program:
11:00–12:00 Shaping the Future as Women in Informatics: Stories, Challenges, Opportunities
Melánia Pamuki-Puskás
PhD student, Doctoral School of Applied Informatics and Applied Mathematics, Obuda University
WIE AG Chair, IEEE Hungary Section
Women have always played a significant role in the world of informatics and science. This presentation will highlight the contributions women have made and continue to make through their research and ideas, helping to shape the future. It will also shed light on how informatics can serve as a powerful tool in fields such as healthcare, scientific research, and personal development.
12:00–13:00 From Bits to the eParliament: A Journey Through the Challenges and Successes of a First Generation Neumann Award Winning Woman in Informatics
The event is particularly timely, as a few weeks ago a book was published chronicling the rich life story of Eszter Gérecz Kertészné, recipient of the Neumann Award, the Neumann Lifetime Achievement Award, and the Knight’s Cross of the Order of Merit of the Republic of Hungary.
During this conversation, she will be joined by Judit Mallász, an award winning science journalist and recipient of the Attila Kovács Prize.
The discussion will offer a glimpse into the early days of Hungarian computer science and the milestones of Eszter’s career, spanning from programming in the 1960s, through database research and leading computing centers, to her key role in establishing successful parliamentary informatics in Hungary.
Hearing about her achievements both at home and in international professional organizations naturally raises a question: how was she able to create and maintain harmony within her family while building such an impressive career?
Looking at her youthful, energetic appearance, we will also explore how staying active remains an essential part of her retirement years and how this contributes to the completeness of her remarkable life’s work.
The language of the presentations is Hungarian.
