The IEEE WIE Distinguished Volunteer and Mentor series highlights a dedicated WIE volunteer who is well known for their notable contributions to IEEE WIE.
In this issue, we feature Rakia Souei, IEEE WIE Puzzle Creator.
IEEE WIE: How has your experience with IEEE WIE shaped your career and personal growth?
Souei: “Being a member of IEEE WIE for three years has been one of the most valuable experiences in both my career and personal growth. Creating puzzles strengthened my focus and research skills, as I explored meaningful content that could positively engage members and encourage collaboration. I also developed analytical skills by identifying the most active times to publish content. Participating in meetings expanded my network, boosted my confidence, and deepened my commitment to empowering women in engineering.”
IEEE WIE: What innovative projects or initiatives are you currently working on that you believe will make a significant impact?
Souei: “I am currently working on creating interactive puzzles within the WIE community to promote engagement and aiming to increase member participation in IEEE WIE.”
IEEE WIE: Can you share a moment when you overcame a significant challenge in your professional journey and what you learned from it?
Souei: “Honestly, I have not faced significant challenges yet. The volunteering experience has been smooth so far, and the responsibilities are manageable. Our team leader is supportive, kind, and understanding, which creates an encouraging and motivating environment. This positive atmosphere has made my volunteering experience more enjoyable.”
IEEE WIE: How do you stay updated with the latest trends and advancements in your field?
Souei: “I stay updated by following industry publications, participating in webinars, attending professional events, and engaging with technical communities. I also continuously research emerging trends and tools related to my field to improve my knowledge.”
IEEE WIE: What role do you think mentorship plays in the success of young professionals, and how do you approach mentoring others?
Souei: “Mentorship is not just about sharing information; it is about understanding team members, recognizing their needs and abilities, and encouraging them to achieve common goals. A good mentor creates a comfortable environment where individuals feel motivated to give their best and work collaboratively. This fosters coordination, mutual influence, and teamwork. It also helps leaders better understand their team’s strengths and capabilities, enabling them to guide effectively and achieve meaningful results together.”
