IEEE WIE AROUND THE WORLD
IEEE WIE Affinity Group KCG COLLEGE OF TECHNOLOGY
IEEE WIE sponsored Workshop on “Exploring the Digital World
for Empowering Women
The KCG College of Technology would like to thank IEEE Women in Engineering for sponsoring this good cause. The IEEE Women in Engineering sponsored workshop was conducted on March 31, 2017 at Government School Karapakkam, in Chennai, Tamil Nadu, India. The preparations for the workshop took one month, searching for an appropriate school where poor children are studying and which would permit us to conduct the workshop. We finally got permission from Government High School Karapakkam to conduct the seminar for the girls of grades eighth and ninth. These girls were not given computer education and had no exposure to the digital world. Hence, we framed the contents of the workshop to start with the basics and cover topics that would be useful for them to get a job, and at the same time search for a job. Since net connectivity was not there in the school, we made necessary arrangements to give net connectivity. We provided a LAN Connection and used dongles to enable internet in the school. The workshop goal was to promote the entry of these girls into the digital world, and to empower them in their possible interest to pursue further opportunities in computers. Five resource persons and five student coordinators from KCG College of Technology took the responsibility of making the event a successful one.
IEEE WIE Malaysia Section
IEEE WIE Malaysia Section reaches out to female students though WIEEReach
Despite many programs and campaigns for girls to take up careers in STEM, engineering is still very much dominated by males in Malaysia. Electrical and Electronic (EE) Engineering especially, is rather unpopular. This could be due to the lack of exposure and understanding of the roles and contributions of EE engineers.
With this in mind, the IEEE Malaysia Section IEEE WIE Affinity Group and the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering (EEE), Universit Teknologi PETRONAS (UTP), jointly organized an outreach program targeting students from all-girls schools taking the Physics subject in Form 4 and 5. The program was named WIEEReach – a combination of the words IEEE WIE, EE and outreach. The program, which received the R10 IEEE WIE Support Fund for 2017, consists of a series of visits to schools with the aim of creating awareness and a positive image of a career in EE engineering. The first of this series was conducted at the Raja Perempuan School (RPS) in Ipoh, Perak on June 17, 2017. A total of 93 Form 4 and 5 students participated in the four-hour program. Read full report
