IEEE Women in Engineering Kharagpur Section, India organized IEEE WIE track “WIE @ 2016 TechSym” in 2016 IEEE Students’ Technology Symposium on Friday, 30 September 2016. The event consisted of an insightful Keynote Talk, a challenging 3-minute “Talk-it-Up” competition for female authors and an interactive Panel Discussion which garnered healthy participation from TechSym attendees.
Keynote Talk: The speaker for this segment Dr. Uday Shankar, Rajiv Gandhi School of Intellectual Property Law, IIT Kharagpur gave a beautiful and insightful keynote talk on “Women Empowerment”. He interacted with attendees too and answered their queries. Read full report

IEEE WIE Affinity Group of Kharagpur Section, India conducted the First Phase of its STAR program in the premises of Kendriya Vidyalaya No-2, Kharagpur on September 09, 2016. The program was attended by inquisitive and enthusiastic lot of 51 girls. The girls were from standard X to XII. The session included introduction to Engineering, a sneak peek to the plethora of Engineering branches that exists, career opportunities, available entrance exam options for state level and national level entry to Engineering study and an exciting quiz session. The IEEE Women in Engineering Affinity Group of Kharagpur Section along with the Student Branch and Student Branch Chapters held their 2015 Annual General Meeting on August 25, 2016. The 2015 Activity and Financial Reports were presented by the outgoing Chair. The benefits of joining IEEE and IEEE WIE were presented.
The new slate of office bearers for 2016 was announced. Official charge handover resolutions were signed by the outgoing and incoming Executive Committee members. The activity plan for the year 2016 was presented by the incoming 2016 Chair of IEEE WIE Affinity Group, Ms. Sabita Langkam. Outgoing executive committee members were presented with certificates and tokens of appreciation, and the new members were welcomed. A huge volunteer support sailed us through 2015.
They were lovingly felicitated. About 100 participants, including graduate student members, and members from the Kharagpur Section attended the meeting. Women In Engineering, IEEE ASET organized a Self Defense workshop for girls on 7th September, 2016 at the Seminar Hall of Amity School of Engineering and Technology, Bijwasan. The aim of the workshop was to educate girls on the importance of learning Self Defense in their daily lives and to help them tackle the situations of emergency effectively. Around 100 girls attended the event along with 20 female faculty members. Every girl seemed very enthusiastic as they learned to empower themselves. Read full report

IEEE WIE Luncheon and Promotional Booth at the IEEE 2016 International Symposium on Electromagnetic Compatibility, Shaw Center, Ottawa, ON, July 25th-29th
The luncheon took place on July 26th at the Westin Hotel, and featured a talk “We Achieve More Together” by Joanna Hill, the EMC Specialist at Hella and Consultant at JPHill. This luncheon was co-chaired by Irina Kasperovich, the EMC IEEE WIE Liaison, and Elena Uchiteleva, the IEEE WIE R7 Regional Coordinator. The attendance was about 20 people, and the luncheon was kindly funded by the IEEE EMC Society.

Women in Engineering IEEE Affinity Group & IEEE Student Chapter, Integral University, Lucknow in collaboration with Department of Electronics and Communication Engineering organized a One Day National Seminar on “Power of setting goals” on 27th August 2016 (Saturday). Experts from industry & academia expressed their views on the topic.
The Seminar was presided over by Convener, Prof. S. Hasan Saeed, HoD ECE, and was graced by presence of Dr. Syed Nadeem Akhtar Dean Engineering, Prof Aqil Ahmad, COE, HoD/ Deans of various departments. Read full report
IEEE WIE Tunisia in IEEE SMC 2016, Budapest, Hungary
The 2016 IEEE International Conference on Systems, Man, and Cybernetics (SMC 2016) will be held at Hotel Intercontinental Budapest. SMC 2016 is the flagship conference of the IEEE Systems, Man, and Cybernetics Society. It provides an international forum for researchers and practitioners to report up-to-the-minute innovation and development, summarize state-of-the-art, and exchange ideas and advances in all aspects of systems science and engineering, human machine systems, and cybernetics. IEEE Women in Engineering Leadership Summit, October 13, 2016
“Beyond Boundaries”, a focus on Inspiration, Leadership, Empowerment and Innovation
The IEEE Women in Engineering International Leadership Summit took place at American University in Dubai under the theme “Beyond Boundaries”. The summit was opened by Dr. Boutheina Tlili, IEEE WIE chair UAE section and the summit chair. She briefed the audience about IEEE and IEEE WIE. The summit had more than 150 attendees from academia and industry.
The summit focused on Inspiration, Leadership, Empowerment and Innovation aiming to bring together a global gathering of women in technology who aim to inspire, engage and empower other women. H.E. Dr. Eesa Bastaki, President – University of Dubai took to the stage as the keynote speaker where he stressed the importance of investment in education to close the gap in the gender disparity. He urged delegates not to be stagnant but to continuously innovate. He echoed the sentiments of H.H. Sheikh Mohammed Bin Zayed Al Nahyan who once said “if we invest in education now, then after 50 years we will be able to celebrate when we export the last barrel of oil.”
